Frequently asked questions regarding "sedation dentistry":
Q. What is Sedation Dentistry?
A. "Sedation Dentistry" or "Sleep Dentistry" involves using specialized medications given intravenously or orally to relax, calm or put to sleep an anxious patient before and during a dental procedure, the medications have an amnestic property - in other words they prevent recall, helping patients not have any memory of the procedures done during the sedation. The medications are individually tailored and dosed for each patient to provide them with the optimal and required level of sedation, making the training of the doctor proving sedation dentistry very important.
Q. What special training is required to offer sedation dentistry? I see so many advertisements for sedation dentistry?
A. Most dentists offering sedation dentistry have taken short courses in conscious or moderate sedation spanning a few days to a few weeks, there are only a handful of dentists in the country like Dr. Sharda and Dr Ajay who are dentist anesthesiologists and have received years of hospital based extensive medical training in anesthesiology and have experience in safely sedating patients of all ages and with complex medical conditions in and outside of the Hospital.
Q. How do I know what kind of sedation I need?
A. You will meet with Dr. Sharda for an anesthesia consult where you will get a chance to discuss your fears and apprehensions about dental treatment, Dr. Sharda is specially trained to analyze the levels of procedural anxiety in patients and will give you the best option for the level of sedation which will work best for you.
Q. Can I eat or drink before the sedation dentistry procedure?
A. As a general rule you can have solid foods up to 6 hrs before the procedure, clear liquids ( plain water, no pulp juices, coffee or tea without milk or creamer) till 2 hrs before the procedure and nothing by mouth after that. You will be given detailed pre anesthesia instructions after your anesthesia consult visit especially considering your medical history and health status.
Q. What can I bring to my sedation dentistry appointment?
A. We provide plush blankets, pillows and other comfort amenities, anything that makes you more comfortable or secure is welcome.
Q. I am scared even to come and sit on the dental chair?
A. A special oral medication can be given to you before the appointment that will safely produce a very relaxed and anxiety-free state to help you cope with this anxiety.
Q. I don’t want to come to your office alone. May I bring someone with me?
A. Of course. We encourage you to bring a reassuring companion, spouse or parent to your consultation.
Q. Will I remember any of the procedure after sedation dentistry?
A. Recall of the procedure depends on the level of sedation, with IV sedation most patients do not remember anything a few minutes after the start of the IV line and have no recall of the dental procedure or for how long they where sedated.
Q. Will I be monitored during the sedation?
A. Yes, you will be monitored as per the American Society of Anesthesiologists standards for sedation and general anesthesia through out the procedures and your vitals recorded every 5 minutes.
Q. How long will it take me to get out of sedation after the Dental procedure?
A. The medications we use are very short acting and are titrated in a manner that you will be out of sedation and able to sit and talk right after the procedure is over.
Q. Will I be nauseous or in pain AFTER the procedure?
A. If you had IV sedation you will be given a very effective anti-nausea and pain medication in the IV that should keep you nausea and pain free right after the procedure, the IV pain medication usually last 4-6hrs and depending upon the dental work performed and if pain is expected after the IV medication wears off you will be prescribed oral medications to be taken for pain at home.
Q. Can I drive after IV sedation dentistry?
A. No, even though the medications we use are short acting and get you out of the sedation phase quickly you still won't be ready to drive or make important decisions for the rest of the day and 24hrs after procedure, therefore we recommend that you bring a ride with you and have a responsible adult at home and not take any life changing important decisions or schedule any activities on the day of the sedation.
Q. Can I drive after Oral Sedation dentistry?
A. No, just like IV sedation you won't be ready to drive or make important decisions for the rest of the day and 24hrs after procedure, therefore we recommend that you bring a ride with you and have a responsible adult at home and not take any life changing important decisions or schedule any activities on the day of the sedation.
Q. Can I drive after Nitrous oxide sedation?
A. Yes, as long as you are alert and well oriented you can drive after Nitrous Oxide-Oxygen sedation.
Q. Can I go to work next day after sedation dentistry?
A. Yes, our sedation dentistry appointments are first appointments in the morning, giving you enough time to recover during the rest of the day and night and most of our patients are ready for work next day.
Q. Can I go to the gym later in the evening after sedation dentistry?
A. No, You should not go to the gym or operate heavy machinery for at least 24-48 hrs after IV/Oral sedation dentistry.
Q. Do I need to have an adult stay with me for the rest of the day after sedation dentistry?
A. Yes, we recommend that you have a responsible adult around for the rest of the day, even though the drugs used are short acting, some people may be out of co-ordination for some time increasing the risk of falls etc.
Q. I have not seen a dentist in many years and need a lot of work to be done, how many visits will it take me to get everything taken care of with sleep/sedation dentistry?
A. As you will be under sedation we try to finish as much treatment as can be safely completed in one visit, if extensive lab work is needed then it may require more than one visit.
Q. I am even scared to get a cleaning done, can you put me to sleep just for that?
A. Yes, we have many patients whom we see every 6 months for regular periodic exam and cleaning under sedation.
